Charles Parkinson was born in Singapore in 1954, the son of Professor C Northcote Parkinson (of ‘Parkinson’s Law’ fame). His family moved to Alderney in the Channel Islands when Charles was five, and it was there that Charles met TH White, the author of ‘The Sword in the Stone’. White apparently wanted to adopt Charles, on the grounds that “parents always do a lousy job of raising children”.
However, the Parkinsons decided that Alderney was too small for them, and moved to Guernsey when Charles was six. After school in England. Charles was accepted into Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he read Law. He then qualified as a Chartered Accountant in London, before taking the Bar finals and being called to the London Bar.
Returning to Guernsey, he enjoyed a successful career in financial services, before being elected to the island’s government in 2004. He has since served as a Deputy in the island’s parliament (sitting as an independent).
One of his hobbies is ancient history, and Charles has written two books on the subject, ‘Lisia’ and ‘The Duke and the Decoy’, as well as a family history entitled ‘Relatively Unusual’. He continues to research prehistory and the early Middle Ages, and this website is the fruit of his ongoing studies.
